Tough prisoners from Peru showed their softer side as they tried to break a record for the largest number of people dancing in jail.
Around 1,200 convicts from Lurigancho prison, in Lima, donned brightly coloured gym wear as they made an attempt to surpass the achievement held by prisoners from a Philippines institute.
The detainees were recorded dancing to reggaeton and merengue beats, in a scene that was in stark contrast to the daily reality of being at the jail.

Normally the prisoners are exposed to daily violence but the integration of aerobic routines is said to have reduced this.
‘There has been a radical change in the prison and this is because of the world of the colonel, the world of Alejandro Nunez del Arco, the work of all the guys who have been here,’ said inmate Miguel Angel Suarez.

Prison guards keep an eye on the at least 1,200 prisoners dressed in multicolored uniforms staging an aerobic 'full body' dancing show in the Lurigancho high security prison in Lima, Peru, on June 14, 2013. Inmates from Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador and Colombia, armed their steps (small wooden platforms), practiced for more than three months and danced to rock music, and reggaton meringues, beating the world record for more people dancing in jail, said Roger Romero, creator of full body in Peru, who coached the prisoners. The prison’s director Colonel Tomas Garay added they wanted to achieve a new Guinness Record to show the world that change was possible.
It is not yet known if they set a new world’s best for the most prisoners dancing in one location at the same time.
