Sports enhancing substances are everywhere. Even with rules regulating their use, athletes are still using them. Some of these substances include steroids, pre-workout, and even cocaine. Throughout my four years of wrestling, I have seen all of these used.
My friend who weighed 132 pounds in his junior year started using steroids after the end of wrestling season (March) to the beginning (November). He ended up gaining 60 pounds and going to states. His workout regimen was drastically changed to lead to the massive gain in weight and strength in 6 months.
Starting the mid-season of my sophomore year, we started to use pre-workout for some practices and matches. As I said before, pre-workout increases the size of the blood vessels in your body to increase blood flow to your muscles, as well as a high dose of caffeine (depending on the brand, one scoop of pre-workout can be the equivalent of 2-3 cups of coffee). So when we took this during our practices, we felt unstoppable, any thoughts of giving up on an exercise, or slowing down were immediately thrown out the window. It also helped keep us focused which was very good for training. This wasn’t that bad of a substance for us to consume because it was legal.
Cocaine is a different story. This is a ridiculous alternative to resort to because it shouldn’t even be considered. I don’t really know that much about cocaine; however, I have been around people using it and have seen how the drug affects them. In the locker room, some of my teammates snorted lines before matches, which is a complete obliteration to their health. After using, they became extremely energetic and could not stop moving. They thought they were on top of the world and nothing could stop them. Almost all of those who used won their match because like they said, nothing could stop them. They were an unrelenting force of pure energy and dominance.
