I love running across women who are devoted to health and fitness, especially those who understand the importance of lifting weights! I ran across Kimberly on Twitter and immediately wanted to become her friend! 😉 She has an amazing physique and I am quite envious of her personal strength!
My current lifting-related goal is to be able to squat heavier. I feel that this is probably the weakest aspect of my training in proportion to everything else. I also want to continue building my overall strength and flexibility.
Piece of advice for new lifters or those reluctant to try:
Start light and work on learning proper form. Work with a trainer or find a workout online complete with demonstrations of how to do exercises to get a feel for strength training. Get comfortable with the weights by using high rep ranges until you get the hang of it. Go to failure. If you can do more than 20 reps with a weight, increase the amount of weight you are using. Build up your strength over time using this strategy and make sure you never sacrifice form or you can get injured.
Ladies, don’t be afraid of heavy weights, it is very difficult for women to gain “bulky” muscle. Building muscle will not only help your body to burn fat more efficiently, but it will also make you look and feel better. Lifting is empowering. You begin to feel really good about yourself as you progress to the next level and see the definition start to come through in your muscles, and even more so as those around you begin to take notice.
My love for the fitness industry has grown so much that I have decided to pursue my personal trainer certification and also plan to compete in fitness competitions in 2013. You can follow my contest preparation on my website at:
