Finding time for fitness can be hard when you want to spend your free time with your baby.
“We haven’t been to the Y once,” Erin Kiernan told personal trainer Angie Gallagher.
“That’s a universal problem, or struggle that new moms have,” Angie responded. “Because we don’t want to be separated from them!”
It’s hard, but Angie says, it is possible.
“It’s a process," Angie said. "It’s baby steps.”
Since Erin doesn’t want to miss out on time with Michael Francis, Angie shows them exercises they can do with a baby.
“This is the equivalent of little Michael,” Sonya Heitshusen joked while grabbing a fifteen-pound dumbbell. “This is my little Michael!”
They start with squats, and fifteen pounds feels like plenty of weight, especially for a new mom who hasn’t hit the gym in months.
“This doesn’t feel like my body, do you know what I mean?” Erin asked Angie, “Yes!” she replies, “I felt uncomfortable all the time right after the babies, you’re carrying weight you’re not used to carrying, your muscles aren’t responding the way you’re used to, you feel heavy and sluggish."
That’s exactly why it’s so important to start doing something. All of these moves can be done at home with no equipment so Erin can squeeze in a few reps when she's not dealing with diapers and bottles and still have quality time with the little one.
“It goes by in a flash so soak up every minute with your baby,” Angie said. “But also take care of yourself so you can be the best mom that you can. Little steps at a time will get you where you want to go.”
