It is best to run the 800 at the track as a continuous effort with a short walk break (15-20 steps) after 400 meters if necessary.
Speedwork is the second most frequent cause of running injuries (increasing total weekly mileage is first). These are the main reason for injuries due to speed work: • Inadequate warm-up & warm-down during speed sessions • Inadequate Transition (didn’t do 4-6 weeks of hill work prior to speed work) • Running too hard on long run days (Saturdays) • Sprinting during speed work • Too many weeks of speed (no more than 12 weeks for a half) • Running faster on speed reps than you should • Too many hard days in a short time period (includes speed work, long runs & races)
